Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the best men’s player at the Best Fifa Football Awards in Milan. This is his first fifa award since it was created in 2016. Christiano Ronaldo won it twice while Luka Modric won it the last year. United States forward Megan Rapinoe won the best women’s player award.
Incidentally, Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk missed the top prize while Christiano Ronalo chose to skip the award ceremony. Messi’s name came as a surprise as the 28 year old Dijk who also won the UEFA’s player of the year award last month was said to be leading the race.
Both, Messi and Dijk are eyeing the coveted Ballon d’Or which will be announced on December 2.
“I want to thank those who decided to give me this recognition. The most important thing for me is the collective awards, but today is also a very special night for me.” said Messi.
The 5 time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi scored 51 goals in 50 games and got his team 10th La Liga title. Though, Barcelona lost to Liverpool in the Champions league semifinal and were knocked out of Copa Del Rey by Valencia.
Messi was also named in FIFA World XI along with Christiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe.
