After a 5th day nail-biter of a match, India and South Africa play their 2nd test of the three match Gandhi-Mandela Trophy at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune (Thursday, October 10 – Monday, October 14). While India leads the series 1-0, the 2nd test match of the India- South Africa test series will be nothing but exciting.

While the one-dayers played on this ground have been high scoring fixtures, the pitch changes its behaviour drastically with the longest format of the game. The last test match played on this ground was in 2017 – India Australia series, where India could barely cross 100 runs in each innings. Steeve O’Keefe ripped apart the Indian batting line up and grabbed a six-for in both the innings.

The match ended in just 3 days, while the Aussies emerged as victorious, the pitch ended up getting a ‘poop’ rating from ICC.

With the weather this time is favourable at 37-degrees, we really don’t expect a rank turner for this game. Yet, cricket is a funny game, and you don’t really know what’s going in the heads of the home team management. Also, it has rained in the last few days in Pune; However, the ground staff is upbeat about the on-ground drainage system. Few practice one-day matches started on time despite overnight rain.

Squad for India vs. South Africa 2nd test match

The Indian playing 11 will be picked from:

Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Mayank Agarwal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Rishabh Pant (Wicket Keeper), Cheteshwar Pujara, Wriddhiman Saha (Wicket Keeper), Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Hanuma Vihari, Umesh Yadav and Shubhman Gill

The way both the batters and bowlers performed in the 1st test at Hyderabad, it is unlikely that there will be any change in the Indian playing 11 until and unless a player gets injured at the last moment. Shubman Gill may have to wait for his test debut while Rishabh Pant may still warm the bench and try to find his mojo. Umesh Yadav, who replaced the injured Jasprit Bumrah, along with Kuldeep Yadav are unlikely to make their way into the squad as well.

The South African playing 11 will be picked from:

Faf du Plessis (c), Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock, Dean Elgar, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Vernon Philander, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada, Rudi Second

We may see a couple of changes in the South African lineup. Experts have voiced their opinion in favour of the pacer Anrich Nortje. Dean Piedt or Senuran Muthusamy may make way for him. We expect one change in the batting line-up too.

Players to watch out for:

Rohit Sharma, Mayank Aggarwal, Virat Kohli, and Ravi Ashwin for India. Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada and Faf du Plessis, who’s due for a big one, for the Proteas.
